Retiring from Private Practice May 31, 2026

Quick Bio

Dear Patient,

I am writing to personally share an update regarding my role at First State Orthopaedics.

After much reflection, I will be retiring from my interventional pain Private Practice and returning to anesthesia practice and academic teaching. It has been a privilege to care for so many of you, and I am deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me.

Our team is committed to making this transition as smooth and seamless as possible. If any adjustments to your appointments are needed, someone from our office will reach out to you directly. During this transition time I will have limited hours which will conclude on May 18, 2026. My final day with the practice will be May 31, 2026.

If you have any questions or would like help with scheduling, please do not hesitate to contact the office.

Thank you sincerely for the trust you have placed in me and in First State Orthopaedics. It has truly been an honor to be part of your care.

Warm regards,

Dr. Dale Sutherland

Dr. Sutherland has been practicing in Lewes since 2007. He is a Board Certified Anesthesiologist practicing Pain Management and will be a tremendous asset to the First State Orthopaedics Southern Division Spine Center and practice. His interventional pain solutions are designed to help patients successfully manage their acute or chronic pain, to restore function and assist with reducing pain associated with day to day activity.

Originally from the Midwest, he obtained his undergraduate degree with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology (Summa Cum Laude) from Creighton University. Immediately following, he attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska’s College of Medicine. He completed his residency training in Anesthesiology and a Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at Yale University. Early on, he served in our nation’s military for 9 years as a Major in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps. He is licensed and has been employed in multiple states across the country, working as an Anesthesiologist in Illinois, Nebraska, California, Mississippi, and Delaware. He also enjoys teaching, being named Professor of the year while at the University of Mississippi, and continuing to teach at medical conferences throughout the world. In Sussex County, he has served as a Director of Cardiac Anesthesia and Director of Pain Management, as well as managed his own privately-owned Pain Management practice.  Dr. Sutherland was voted a Top Doc, doctors that were the most recommended by their professional peers, in Delaware Today magazine in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2025.

His free time is spent with his family, traveling, biking, working out and playing rugby.
